Being a Bridesmaid ( or Maid of Honor ) takes much more than just parading on the Church aisle in a gorgeous Italian Satin bridesmaid dress. You should help her so she can have some fun in this very stressful moment but emotional time of her life.
Here are some suggestions in how to be that special Bridesmaid. I hope this will inspire you to go way out of your formal duties and be that special friend.

a. Surprise the just married couple stocking full their kitchen with food and goodies, so when they get back from the honeymoon they do not have to go to the grocery store!

b. When the invitations are ready, organize an informal gathering with the other Bridesmaid and tell them to bring something to eat, get some music going and help the Bride with the tedious job of addressing the envelopes and folding the invitations. Not only you are going to have fun, but you will be helping the Bride in a very boring duty.

c. Help the Bride to stay relaxed and happy. Get tickets to a good happy movie or theater function. Keep her in a good mood and make her feel special.

d. Take responsibility for the gift baskets or bags for out-of-town guests' hotel rooms. Include a welcome letter, maps, relevant phone numbers, snacks, postcards, city souvenirs, and suggestions for fun activities.

f. If is a casual affair, offer to make the center pieces, but if is more of a formal wedding, then offer to supply the favors.

g. Keep an eye in what is she drinking, and help maintaining that cup full. Brides very seldom have time to make trips to the bar. Just make sure that she doesnt go overboard with the drinks. A dizzy bride is more complicated to handle.

h. At the end of the reception, help with the chores needed, like collecting the disposable cameras and taking care that they get developed.

i. Tell the Bride that you will take care of things after the party. Collect the cake topper, make sure the presents are delivered properly, and do not forget to pack the toasting goblets.

j. When the party is over, help her sending the bridal gown to the cleaners.

k. Have ready to give to her (just before she leaves for the honeymoon) a little traveler pack with glasses, sunscreen lotion, body lotion, perfume, a small brush, moisturizer etc.
Just in case she forgets some of that. She will really appreciate it.
